Nvidia, Google and Emerald AI founded the AI Energy Management Alliance. It promotes flexible load for AI data centers. The group evolved from the Advanced Energy Management Alliance. Frank Lacey will lead it. Anthropic, NRG and Constellation Energy are also members. A Johns Hopkins study found flexible data centers could save $15 billion yearly in PJM. Google already has 1 gigawatt of demand flexibility in its contracts. Emerald AI is building a 100-megawatt flexible data center in Virginia with Nvidia. The alliance aims to make data centers more grid-friendly. FERC has asked power markets to reform for large load flexibility.

What changed

The Advanced Energy Management Alliance advocated for demand response for large electricity customers since 2014.

What it unlocks

Coordinating industry efforts to make AI data centers reduce grid draw during peak demand.

  • $15 billion per year saved in PJM Interconnection
  • 1 gigawatt of demand flexibility in Google contracts
  • 100-megawatt data center in Virginia
  • <100 hours per year for peak reduction
