California Governor Gavin Newsom signed 13 bills on child safety in AI and social media. One measure, SB 1119, is named "Adam's Law" after Adam Raine. It requires crisis protocols for companion chatbots when a child expresses suicidal thoughts. It also requires parental controls and alerts when a child turns off safety settings. Companies must commission independent child safety audits and annual risk assessments. Another bill bars social platforms from giving users under 16 autoplay and history-based recommended feeds. The package extends child sexual exploitation law to AI-generated or digitally altered depictions of under-18s. It also limits targeted advertising to children and regulates use of K-12 pupil data in AI systems. A separate bill covers companion chatbots built into toys. Newsom again urged the federal government to set national rules.
