AMD is preparing to ship Helios, its first complete rack-sized computing system for AI, and Microsoft said it will install the racks in its Azure data centers alongside earlier customers Meta, OpenAI and Oracle. The system bundles AMD's own graphics chips, processors, networking and software, and is the first credible alternative to Nvidia's comparable racks. Shipping starts later this year, and neither pricing nor the amount of capacity was disclosed.

What changed

AMD sold individual AI chips and had no full rack-scale system to compete with Nvidia's Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin.

Buying a complete AI computing rack combining chips, networking and software from a supplier other than Nvidia, and renting Helios capacity through Microsoft Azure.

  • Meta committing up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, starting with 1 gigawatt on Helios
