OpenAI banned a group of ChatGPT accounts based in Russia that it says were part of a covert campaign to spread misinformation online. The operators generated social media comments in Russian and asked the tool to remove clues to their origin, promoting a fake research institute and a "sovereignty index" flattering to Russia. OpenAI said the reach was limited, and that access from Russia is blocked but was masked using VPNs.
What changed
The accounts were active and generating social media content posing as independent commentary.
