Henna Virkkunen said the US is arriving at many of the same AI safeguards as Europe. She is the European Commission's top technology official. She spoke to Axios at this week's G20 innovation summit. US safeguards emerge through state laws and court cases rather than one broad law, she said. She also said the EU must simplify its own rules and become faster for business. ChatGPT now falls under strict duties in the EU's Digital Services Act. The EU is building a framework for testing models before release and trusted partner access. The Trump administration has a voluntary pre-release review scheme it will not publish. Sam Altman confirmed the administration reviewed OpenAI's Astra model. Elon Musk told the summit that new technology should be legal by default.
