Cognition published an open specification for agent memory stored as a git repository. It uses a MEMORY.md entry point with one-line entries, sources, and cross-links between files. A dedicated Dreaming agent periodically adds new memory and cleans up existing entries. The spec supports personal, swarm, team, and multiplayer memory use cases. Repositories can contain Markdown notes, SQL queries, scripts, and other files. Each entry is a one-line bullet with optional metadata like source and added date. Cross-links use double-bracket syntax to reference other files. Multiple memory repos can be loaded in a single session. Each repo retains its own ownership, permissions, and history. Cognition released the spec as open source and invites community contributions.
What it unlocks
Agents can now share, update, and retain knowledge across sessions using a git-based memory repository.
What you need to act on it
- a git client
- an agent capable of reading and writing to a local filesystem
