OpenAI published an analysis on Monday, July 27, 2026, examining more than 800,000 ChatGPT messages from U.S.-based users to see how much work people do outside their stated occupations. About 44% of all occupation-specific messages involved tasks outside the sender's own occupation; for HR professionals the share was 69%, the third-highest of the occupational groups studied, behind design and customer experience roles. HR users most often applied ChatGPT to marketing tasks (23% of their occupational messages), followed by engineering (18%) and finance (16%). OpenAI said the pattern shows AI shifting the division of labour inside organizations, with workers handling tasks themselves rather than delegating them, and noted task crossover was more common among users at small businesses.
