Bloomberg reported on July 16, 2026 that Google is months behind schedule on Gemini 3.5 Pro, its planned flagship model, as it tries to improve coding performance. Ten current and former employees described frustration that Anthropic and OpenAI now field stronger models, and said multiple internal groups — Google Cloud, DeepMind and the Android team — are each building AI coding tools, with Chief AI Architect Koray Kavukcuoglu now working to unify them and a DeepMind coding team formed under Sebastian Borgeaud. A late-June change to Gemini's training data aimed at coding produced disappointing results. Google said it is testing 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model and others with partners, and is engaged with the US government on model testing. Google also said 75% of its code is now AI-generated, with tools consolidating under Google Antigravity.
