Anthropic opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a common way for AI agents to find and operate physical instruments such as microscopes, liquid handlers and robotic arms. Access is limited to selected research labs and advanced manufacturers who apply, and the specification is not yet open source. Early work with Genentech and university labs showed Claude could tune liquid-handling settings and recover from some errors, but it misjudged physical causes such as air bubbles without human guidance.
