Alibaba's chip design unit T-Head announced at the World AI Conference in Shanghai on Saturday that it is open-sourcing SAIL, the full software stack for its Zhenwu series of AI chips, with the stated aim of lowering migration barriers for developers tied to Nvidia's CUDA. T-Head said programmers can adapt SAIL to mainstream AI frameworks in under seven days. Alibaba has shipped 560,000 Zhenwu chips to more than 400 customers, which now have a publicly available software layer. The move follows Huawei's 2025 open-sourcing of CANN, the platform for its Ascend processors, and a similar approach from Moore Threads. It comes after the Pentagon added Alibaba to its Chinese military companies blacklist in June and after Anthropic accused Alibaba's Qwen lab of distillation against a US company.
