Release2026-08-27

Anthropic announced the Model Hardware Standard, a common interface that lets AI agents operate and communicate with physical machinery such as scientific instruments and advanced manufacturing equipment. It works with any device that has a programmable interface and is not tied to Anthropic's own Claude models. For now it is limited to a selected group of science, robotics and manufacturing organizations, with plans to release it openly later.

What changed

Connecting AI agents to lab and factory equipment required custom integration work for each device.

What it unlocks

AI agents can operate and exchange information with programmable machines through one common interface, regardless of which model vendor is used.
