Amont Labs released LCU, a tool that decouples Codex computer use from the Codex app. It lets any agent harness use the runtime for desktop and browser control. The ChatGPT desktop app must still be installed to supply the runtime. Adapters exist for Pi, Codex CLI and Claude Code. A native approval pane in Claude Code now handles app permissions. Users can manage approved apps via terminal commands with Touch ID. Chrome control is opt-in and requires the official extension. Computer audio recording is also opt-in. Windows 11 x64 support is a candidate for future release. Intel Macs, Wayland and musl Linux are unsupported.
What changed
Codex computer use was tied to the Codex app and required its authentication.
What it unlocks
Using Codex computer use inside any agent harness without the Codex app interface.
What you need to act on it
- ChatGPT desktop app installed locally
- Python 3.12+
- macOS on Apple Silicon or Linux ARM64/x86-64 with X11 and D-Bus
