Release2026-08-13

DeepSeek released the finished version of its V4-Pro model, tuned for agent tasks, and published DeepSeek Harness, a free open-source toolkit for running coding agents that competes with Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. From 16 August the company also replaces its single flat API price with peak and off-peak rates that are substantially higher than today's. Harness is a developer preview and its authors warn of breaking changes.

What changed

DeepSeek charged one flat API rate at prices cut 75% in late May.

What it unlocks

Building a coding agent on an MIT-licensed, swappable framework that can run against DeepSeek, Anthropic or OpenAI models.

  • V4-Pro: $1.31 to $2.64 per 1M in+out off-peak
  • peak V4-Pro: $5.28 per 1M in+out
  • increases of 50% to over 1,100%
  • new pricing starts 16 Aug, 16:00 UTC

What you need to act on it

  • developer skills to run the preview tool
  • API key for hosted V4-Pro
  • tolerance for breaking changes
