GlobalFoundries will build two new semiconductor fabs in Malta, New York. Japan will provide up to $21 billion for the project. The first 300mm fab will break ground later this year. The first facility will open in 2029. Each fab will add 900,000 300mm wafers of annual capacity. The project will create over 1,000 skilled manufacturing jobs. GlobalFoundries will reallocate $955 million from its CHIPS Act award. The funds will go toward silicon photonics and advanced packaging. The U.S. Department of Commerce will receive about 4% equity in GlobalFoundries. The initiative aims to strengthen supply chains for automotive and industrial demand.
