Mark Zuckerberg’s Biohub is leading a partnership with Google and the U.S. government. The group aims to build a universal virtual cell using AI. The project seeks to generate and standardize biological data. The goal is to let scientists test experiments virtually before lab work. Commercial partners get one year of exclusive access to the data they develop. The effort involves $1.8 billion in funding, data, computing and measurement technology. DOE is investing over $500 million over five years. NIH is contributing datasets from more than $500 million in prior investment. Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta are collectively adding $300 million. Biohub previously committed $500 million to the effort.

What changed

Biological data for AI cell modeling was fragmented and insufficient for full virtual cell simulation.

What it unlocks

Testing potential experiments virtually before running them in a lab.

  • $1.8B total funding
  • $500M from DOE over five years
  • $500M prior federal investment via NIH
  • $300M from Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta
