Futurism, citing Engadget reporting, describes owners of Meta's camera-equipped Ray-Ban AI glasses saying they now avoid wearing them in public because of social backlash. Wearers interviewed by Engadget, including a travel creator named Danielle and freelance video producer Will Kujawa, said reactions online and concerns about non-consensual recording made them hesitant, with one calling the device "a fancy paper weight." The backlash follows incidents of men covertly filming women for social content, at least one extortion case, and a class action alleging Meta misrepresented the glasses' privacy protections. Meta has continued to push the product, adding facial recognition features and launching an advertising campaign with Kylie Jenner, while Mark Zuckerberg maintains smart glasses will eventually displace smartphones.
