Regulation2026-09-03

Mark Zuckerberg objected to a proposed national AI regulator in a call with Donald Trump. The call took place in the week of 17 August and was not previously reported. Politico reported it, citing a senior White House official granted anonymity. Meta declined to comment. Another person said Zuckerberg did not ask Trump to change position. Two designs remain under consideration. One is an industry-funded reviewer modelled on FINRA, the US brokerage self-regulator, popularised by Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis. The other is a voluntary ratings scheme modelled on the Motion Picture Association, proposed by David Sacks. Neither is a government regulator. No major AI company has publicly endorsed or opposed the plan.

What changed

A proposed 90-day mandatory model review was cut to a 30-day voluntary window.

  • FINRA funded by 3,000+ member firms
  • 90-day mandatory review became 30-day voluntary
