The Federal Trade Commission opened a sweeping probe of Anthropic, OpenAI and other frontier AI labs. It will issue formal demands for information to assess consumer risks. The probe began before the Hugging Face incident in July. It will compel executives to testify about product dangers. The FTC will use existing laws rather than new ones. Civil investigative demands are expected in the coming weeks. METR, an AI watchdog, is also a target of the probe. The investigation follows earlier demands about AI chatbots' impact on children's mental health.
