Google announced Agent Substrate availability on GKE. Agent Substrate is an open-source agent runtime for high-density sandboxing. It supports 10x higher density than standard container runtimes. It delivers sub-500ms resume operations at over 500 activations per second. It uses hardware-isolated microVMs or gVisor for kernel and network isolation. Idle agents are suspended to free compute resources. It runs on any Kubernetes cluster and works with any agent framework. Nous Research uses it for the Hermes agent. GA production support is available via allowlist. It integrates with Google Axion processors and Filestore agent volumes.
What changed
Running agents at scale required sacrificing control and isolation or accepting high latency and inefficiency of VMs.
What it unlocks
Running millions of sandboxes on a single cluster with sub-second activation and high-density compute.
- 10x higher density than standard container runtimes
- sub-500ms resume operations
- 500 suspend/resume activations per second
- 1,000 dormant agents per host
What you need to act on it
- GKE cluster
- allowlist for GA production support
