Engineering students increasingly turn to AI for problem-solving help. A study found AI answers 95% of knowledge recall questions correctly but only 41% of complex engineering judgement questions. The author proposes an AI-authentic approach over AI-proofing education. The four-stage method is Do, Augment, Challenge, Defend. Students first attempt problems themselves before using AI. AI is then used as a tutor to review approaches and ask questions. Students next assess AI output for errors and assumptions. Finally, students defend their work in peer reviews. The author argues AI literacy is inseparable from disciplinary knowledge. Future engineers need skills in problem framing, technical reasoning, verification, professional judgement, communication and responsibility.
What it unlocks
Students can now use AI as a tutor rather than an answer source in engineering coursework.
