On UPS's Q2 2026 earnings call held Tuesday, CEO Carol Tomé said 68.5% of the carrier's U.S. package volume flowed through automated buildings at the end of the quarter, up from 64% a year earlier — equivalent to 337 million more packages handled with automation. Tomé said cost per piece in an automated building is about 28% lower than in a non-automated one. UPS said in January it would add 24 automated buildings in 2026 on top of 127 existing ones. CFO Brian Dykes said the company will have eliminated 50 million hours and nearly 78,000 operational positions across last year and this year, and will close nearly 150 buildings, as it absorbs a roughly 2 million daily package reduction in Amazon volume.
