Thomson Reuters launched Thomson-1, its first in-house AI model, built by adapting Alibaba's freely downloadable Qwen model with a team from Imperial College London. It will handle some tasks in the CoCounsel legal assistant, starting with document review, mainly to cut the cost of buying AI from outside labs. The company says Claude still powers most of CoCounsel and remains in use.
