Release2026-10-27

Epoch AI launched an explorer tracking AI compute arrivals by country. It uses customs records to estimate national shares. Since 2022, 72% of AI compute went to the US. China received about 10% including its own chips. China holds 18% of AI chips but only 10% of compute. Much of China’s hardware is lower-performance. The US share rose from 60–63% in 2022–2024 to 78% in early 2026. Customs data closely match Epoch’s chip sales estimates. The explorer covers arrivals in H100-equivalents, chip units and trade value. It excludes chips made and used in the same country. The data aims to map the AI chip supply chain geography. Limitations include mixed customs codes and missing domestic use.
