OpenAI began training a new internal model on August 28. It has resolved over 100 open math problems. The pace of progress surprised OpenAI’s own mathematicians. OpenAI is now working with an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI. The group will advise on reviewing and communicating emerging math results. It will also guide how OpenAI’s tools can support mathematical research. The group operates independently and can publicly share its advice. Its members are unpaid and can change the group’s membership. The group will not advise on OpenAI’s internal math progress pace. Initial members include François Charles, Camillo De Lellis, Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Nikhil Srivastava, Ulrike Tillmann, Ravi Vakil, Edward Witten, and Melanie Matchett Wood. The group is hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study.
What changed
OpenAI handled math results internally without external review or communication guidance.
What it unlocks
Mathematicians gain a formal channel to advise on AI-driven math research and its dissemination.
