Release2026-09-24

Google announced Project Suncatcher to test AI hardware in space. A prototype satellite will launch on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission. It will test how Google’s TPU chips handle extreme radiation and vibration. The team already ran vibration and proton beam tests on Earth. Cooling in a vacuum requires radiators and heat pipes. Future satellites will link via high-bandwidth lasers. The first launch aims to gather in-orbit data. A 2027 mission will test two satellites in orbit. The goal is scalable AI compute in space by linking satellite clusters. Satellites in orbit can access near-constant sunlight for power.

What changed

AI hardware had not been tested for space survival at this scale.

What it unlocks

Running scalable AI workloads in orbit using satellite clusters.

  • 10 minutes rocket trip to orbit
  • 50 to 100 g-force on TPU chips
  • 8x more solar power in orbit
  • 2027 next milestone

What you need to act on it

  • a successful prototype satellite launch
  • TPU survival in space conditions
