RAI built AthenaZero, a two-armed robot. It throws, catches and hits balls in baseball-style tasks. The design uses low inertia and joints that yield to external forces. This lets it handle both delicate and forceful movements. Baseball tasks tested throwing, catching and hitting with a bat. The robot completed all three in initial evaluations. The work aims to improve dynamic physical interactions. It challenges the stiff design of conventional industrial robots. The findings were reported in Science Robotics.

What it unlocks
